KENINGAU-MALAYSIA: Thousands of people may have already seen, what is being claimed as apparitions of the Lord Jesus Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary and at least two visible ‘crosses’ formed out from coconut palms since it appeared in Kg Ulu Patikang, Keningau last May 18.
The people who came from near and as far as Kota Kinabalu, Sipitang, Sandakan and other areas to the interior town, located about 111km from Kota Kinabalu returned home with mixed feelings; while some believed it was a miracle, others said it is the sign of a catastrophe (to happen soon).
Many of them came with different hopes and intention as well as out of curiosity as word of the appearances spread like wildfire in the district. Throngs of people in the hundreds made their way to the village everyday from morning till evening with some of them offering prayers and lighting up candles under the coconut tree.
The people could be seen armed with digital cameras and 3G handphones aimed towards the coconut tree in random succession hoping to capture images that may appear right in front of them which could not be seen by the naked eyes.
However, at a glance not everybody who came could see the visible crosses and what more the images of the Saviour and the Blessed Mother. Those who failed to catch sight of the ‘crosses’ did not feel disappointed because they would return again the next day.
It is already three weeks now since the images appeared, and it was said to be very visible when it was first noticed, but now it was said to be slowly turning obscure and withering.
The appearance of the ‘crosses’ was said to have taken place on May 18 at about 6.30pm in Kg Ulu Patikang, a 10-minute drive from Keningau town. It was first seen by 12 year-old Felnny bte Jelius when she heard a voice speaking to her from above outside her house.
Felnny turned her head and looked up at the now famous coconut tree nearby her house in awe and in shock.
She was so afraid when she saw the cross as if it was etched within the coconut palm with shimmering lights penetrating it, said her younger brother Didi, 11, when approached by this New Sabah Times reporter who visited the village last week.
Since then, he said a lot of people visited their house and asked her sister about the sightings but now it is quite difficult to meet her because she would go into hiding fearing to answer questions from the curious visitors.
“My sister immediately told my mother about the sign but she didn’t believe at first. Instead, my mother scolded her and told her not to poke fun at God,” said Didi.
“I thought my daughter was having fun with me in the first place, but then I noticed that she was very scared and cold. Out of curiosity, I went out to check the coconut tree the first thing the next morning and I couldn’t believe what I saw…the cross was so visible,” said Nulitah bte Tuin, the mother of Felnny.
According to her, after careful observation she noted that there are two crosses formed out from the coconut palms, at both sides of the tree.
“I told my relatives and neighbours about it immediately, and soon the news spread fast…the people came in droves and I think it is a mixture of Christian devotees and those who are curious,” said Nulitah who is a Roman Catholic and a housewife.
“My first reaction upon seeing the cross was that I have the feeling that God is here and I could feel that he is sending a message asking the people to repent,” said Nulitah whose husband Jelius Majirun is an odd-job worker.
“I think if we pray and believe in God nothing bad will happen to us. And before the appearance of the cross, I did not receive any dreams or vision,” she said.
“However, I feel myself like a new person now because ever since the cross appeared I feel at ease all the time and I never experience this good lovely feeling before. As you know I have a lot of worries because we are very poor and two of my children (Felnny and six years-old Feliney) are suffering from thallassemia,” said Nulitah who has three children aged from six to 12 years old.
“My faith has also strengthened now since the cross appeared and a lot of people came to see the coconut tree everyday including those from Kota Kinabalu, Sipitang, Sandakan and around Keningau,” she noted.
According to her, the appearance of the cross would be very visible around 5pm to 7pm and when it is full moon.
“A lot of people came to pray in the evening and lighted up candles and placed at the barricade which I don’t mind but I discourage them from worshipping the coconut tree,” she said.
She said the coconut tree was purposely barricaded with wooden planks to prevent the people from disturbing or vandalising the tree.
Evin Ahap who hails from Papar and works in Keningau was also at the scene, and when met said he heard about the appearances from friends and out of curiosity he visited the village.
Evin who is a devoted Roman Catholic was among one of the curious onlookers who captured what looks like the image of Lord Jesus in his point and shoot digital camera.
“I came to the village thrice and the most memorable one was on June 4 at about 5pm…I took several shots and then at about 6.15pm I noticed something in front of the coconut palm, I immediately snapped two to three frames,” he related.
He recalled that when he was snapping the pictures, he could see the image of Lord Jesus through the view -finder but it could not be seen with the naked eyes.
“I was so excited and I asked the person standing beside me whether he could see or not, but he said he did not see anything. Therefore, I believe not everybody could see the apparition; maybe it is meant for certain persons only,” he believed.
To share the good news with others, he said the picture he had taken was sent to family members, relatives and friends through the short messaging service (SMS).
“As far as I know, so far at least six different images of Lord Jesus and Mother Mary was captured through the digital cameras by six different persons,” he believes.
“To me, I think it is a miracle to see the crosses and the images. I also noticed that some individuals and groups are organising vigil prayers before the coconut tree starting from 7pm to 8pm everyday,” he noted.
The coconut tree is barricaded with planks to prevent the people from pulling its roots for remedy purposes because some believe it has healing power whist some could be seen touching the trunk after praying hoping for miracle, as he observed the many antics of the devotees.
Beside that, Evin said the people are also donating money where they left it on the ground with the intention of giving it to Nulitah and her family.
“However, I heard that she (Nulitah) will use the money donated to her to build a grotto there as a remembrance for the appearance of Mother Mary. I think not all the people who came could see the cross because I think they did not know where the actual position to stand,” he said.
According to him, most of the villagers staying in Kg Ulu Patikang are from the Dusun and Murut communities with majority of them Christians working in the nearby sawmill factory. On average hundreds of people converge daily to the village to get a glimpse of the appearances.
Meanwhile, another appearance of the cross was said to have happened at nearby village in Kg Maasak on June 6 and it had attracted a large crowd as well.
It was believed that at least five crosses has formed out from the coconut palms there in two different trees but it is still obscured from the naked eyes but people had already begin to come in droves and offered prayers there, he said.
According to him, most of the villagers in Kg Maasak are a mixture of Dusun, Murut and Indonesians who stayed in rented quarters and worked as vegetables growers over a tract of land there.
Officials of the Catholic Diocese of Keningau have yet to make any comments on the claims.
